Ethylene Sensitivity of Unrooted Cuttings from 28 Genera and Effectiveness of 1-MCP to Prevent Ethylene Damage

W. Roland Leatherwood and John Dole (North Carolina State University),J. Faust (Clemson University)

The objectives for the project were to determine: (1) species that are sensitive to external ethylene, (2) document the effects of ethylene on unrooted cuttings, and (3) evaluate the effectiveness of 1-MCP in preventing ethylene damage.

Modified Atmosphere Use in Extending Unrooted Cutting Quality and Viability

W. Roland Leatherwood and John Dole (NC State University),Jim Faust (Clemson University)

Modified atmosphere (MA) storage is an adjustment in atmospheric gas composition so cuttings can be stored for several days without effects.MA has been used to study postharvest respiration, and to extend the shelf life of a broad category of produce.

Ethephon Residual Catalysis on Unrooted Impatiens hawkeri Cuttings and Stock Plants

W. Roland Leatherwood and John Dole (North Carolina State University)

Ethephon [(2-chloroethyl) phosphonic acid] is used to increase stock plant cutting productivity through increased flower and flower bud abscission and branching. The objective of this study was to assess ethylene evolution from ethephon-treated cuttings during storage and shipping of unrooted cuttings.

Endogenous carbohydrate status affects postharvest ethylene sensitivity in relation to leaf senescence and adventitious root formation in Pelargonium cuttings

Vijay K. Rapaka and James E. Faust (Clemson University), John M. Dole (North Carolina State University), Erik S. Runkle (Michigan State University)

This study investigated the role of ethylene action in postharvest leaf senescence of two cultivars of pelargonium (Pelargonium×hortorum L. H. Bailey ‘Patriot Bright Red' and ‘Patriot White') cuttings to determine whether endogenous carbohydrate status interacts with ethylene action in relation to leaf senescence and adventitious root formation.

Cold-Chain Management- Academics share tips on managing and monitoring temperature in the shipping and sticking process.

James Faust and Vijay Rapaka (Clemson University), John Dole (North Carolina State University) and Erik Runkle (Michigan State University)

Cutting performance relies on strong cold-chain management. The strength of a chain depends on each of the individual links from the time of harvesting the cutting until the cutting is stuck on a propagation bench. This article will discuss why temperature management is so important and will provide guidelines for growers for handling boxes of unrooted cuttings.
